Exploring the 53-Man Roster

Hawks Playbook Podcast Episode 26

Hawks Playbook Podcast Episode 26   Exploring the 53-man roster

Open:  Welcome again to the Hawks Playbook Podcast with your Host’s Bill Alvstad and Keith Myers.  We made it to regular season as we face off this Sunday in an away game versus The Green Bay Packers!  It’s been a great off season since we started 6 months ago way back in February, and here we are 26 episodes later.  If you have been with us since the beginning, we thank you.  If you’re just joining us for the first time (Bandwagoner!), we welcome you too!

This is the first of two podcasts this week.  In this one we explore our way around the 53-man Seahawks roster for the first time.  Who made it, who didn’t make the final cut down? Who did we trade away and who did we trade for? In addition, we will set the 10-man roster.  It’s a great show and we’re glad you’re with us.

In the News:  MEGA TRADE !!  We got Sheldon Richardson !!

In a trade heard around the world, the Seahawks traded Jermaine Kearse, a 2018 2nd round pick and a 2018 7th round pick to the New York Jets for defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson.  As Keith points out in the show, the 7th rounder was a throw in and the team was going to be moving on from Kearse anyway, so we essentially traded a late 2nd round pick for a top 3 or 4 defensive tackle in Richardson.  We talk about it in the show and elaborate how this is a game changer for the defense.

The team also made other trades as well. The two with the most impact were trading Cassius Marsh for a 5th and 7th round pick. We also traded for Justin Coleman (the team’s new back up nickel corner), for a 7th round pick. There were a trio of other trades as well that capped off a seriously busy cut down weekend for the team.

Featured Segment:  Bill and Keith Breakdown the 53-Man Roster

Bill and Keith bob and weave over the team’s final 53-man roster going through it by position group.  It’s a nice comprehensive conversation that include why the team let go of Kasen Williams and moved on from Jermaine Kearse.  Why the addition of Richardson and his interior pass rush ability could set this defense up to be one of the best of all time.  Richardson will be everything that Malik McDowell was going to be for the team this year, only so much better. An experienced pro bowl caliber defensive tackle that is top 5 at his 3-tech position at 26 years old!

Keith and I also go over the 10-man practice squad which includes Trevone Boykin, last year’s backup QB, C Joey Hunt, WR David Moore, RB Mike Davis who performed well in the preseason and TE Tyrone Swoops who we are excited to get on the squad and develop this year.
